NEW DELHI: In a recent social media post, Amit Malviya, BJP’s National Information & Technology Department head, shared a scathing response from Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s second letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The exchange has highlighted the ongoing tension between the state and central governments over the handling of rape and child abuse cases in West Bengal.
Mamata Banerjee had written to the Prime Minister, urging for stringent central legislation to ensure swift and severe punishment for rape and murder cases, emphasizing the need for a 15-day trial process.

Amit Malviya has also shared one more post on X with some videos and pictures writing, “There is a lot more gore and blood being spilled in Bengal.”

He writes, “7 rapes (mostly minors) and in some cases murders too, reported from Mamata Banerjee’s West Bengal in last 48 hours….
But in last 48 hours, Mamata Banerjee has been engaged in every deplorable act, that a civilised Chief Minister would be ashamed of – from issuing open letters to clarifications, from threatening and abusing doctors to inciting nationwide arson.
While the failed Home and Health Minister is preoccupied with suppressing evidences of her corruption and incompetence in the RG Kar rape and murder case, it is important to apprise her of the heinous atrocities unfolding in Bengal—atrocities she seems conveniently oblivious to.
No doubt, Mamata Banerjee’s PR machine aka Bengal Police will be ready with their notices, dismissing everything as “mitthey rotona” and “birodhider sajano ghotona”, but here are the details.
What is even more deplorable is that, instead of taking cognizance of these matters, the West Bengal Women and Child Commission has been wholly transformed into the B-team of the TMC, advocating the innocence of their supremo Mamata Banerjee, despite all her failures.
But enough is enough.
The awakened conscience of Bengal now calls for accountability!
Mamata on the other hand expressed dissatisfaction with Annapurna Devi’s earlier response, stating that it did not address the gravity of the situation.
In her detailed response on August 25, 2024, Annapurna Devi pointed out that the West Bengal government had failed to operationalize the Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) allocated to the state under a Centrally Sponsored Scheme launched in October 2019.
The scheme, designed to expedite trials related to rape and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) cases, allocated 123 FTSCs to West Bengal, including 20 exclusive POCSO courts.
Despite the allocation, the state had only operationalized 6 exclusive POCSO courts by June 2024, leaving 11 FTSCs non-functional.
Devi’s letter points towards the urgency of the matter, noting that West Bengal has a backlog of 48,600 rape and POCSO cases.

She questioned why the state had not fully implemented the necessary measures to address these cases and called Mamata Banerjee to take responsibility for the delay.
Amit Malviya further criticized Banerjee’s government, calling Banerjee a liar and accusing it of failing to protect women and girls in West Bengal.
He highlighted Annapurna Devi’s letter which mentions several recent incidents of rape involving minors, arguing that the Chief Minister was more focused on political posturing than addressing the surge in violence against women.
In her letter to the Prime Minister, Mamata Banerjee reiterated her government’s efforts to address the issue, including establishing additional FTSCs and POCSO courts and introducing helpline numbers. However, she emphasised the need for more robust central legislation to ensure swift justice in such cases.
