NEW DELHI: In a dynamic political landscape, the BJP has secured a noticeable advantage in Madhya Pradesh by leading with 48 seats and having won 65. The Election Commission also indicates the saffron party taking the lead over Congress in Chhattisgarh. Concurrently, in Telangana, the Congress is on the verge of displacing the BRS government led by K Chandrasekhar Rao, aiming to assume control in another southern state. While in Rajasthan, the BJP is ahead in the polls by winning 9 seats and leading in another 105 seats.

In Madhya Pradesh, the BJP is in the lead with 160 seats while the Congress is falling behind with 48 seats and having won 15. The Bharat Adivasi Party (BHRTADVSIP) has also won one seat in the constituency of Sailana.

Both the BJP and the Congress strategically presented issues with the upcoming general elections in mind. The BJP, having secured victories in Gujarat and Tripura last year but faced setbacks in Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh, seeks wins to generate momentum leading up to the Lok Sabha polls. Conversely, the Congress is eager to clinch victories in a few states, anticipating that this success would strengthen its position during seat-sharing discussions with the allies of the INDIA bloc.

The electoral spectacle began at 8 am as the initial ballot boxes were unsealed, marking the commencement of the counting process for the 230 assembly seats in Madhya Pradesh. Stringent security measures have been implemented across 52 district headquarters to guarantee a seamless and transparent electoral procedure.

The Congress is aiming to maintain its control in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. A robust showing in these elections has the potential to considerably strengthen the party’s standing within the opposition INDIA alliance, preparing for a formidable contest against the BJP in the approaching 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The outcomes of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly election might also shape the near-term prospects for several prominent BJP figures, including three Union Ministers – Narendra Singh Tomar, Prahlad Patel, and Faggan Singh Kulaste – BJP General Secretary Kailash Vijaywargiya (contesting from Indore-1), and three Lok Sabha MPs from the saffron party – Rakesh Singh, Ganesh Singh, and Riti Pathak
