Local terrorist support zero, few agents active: J&K Police Chief

SRINAGAR: In an exclusive conversation with The New Indian, Director General of Police J&K Rashmi Ranjan Swain said “Local support for terrorists is virtually nonexistent. We have already eliminated two terrorists in Kathua and are intensifying our search efforts.”

“This success is largely due to assistance from the local community. Local villagers are providing valuable information and guiding the police regarding the terrain and topography. While there are a few enemy agents, they cannot be termed as local supporters. We will bring them to justice and make examples out of them,” Swain stated.

DGP RR Swain said, “The situation in Jammu presents a unique and formidable challenge. Jammu is nearly twice the size of the Kashmir Valley, encompassing the Chenab Valley, Tawi Basin, Ujh, and Ravi regions, making it a vast area. The Pir Panjal range is extremely mountainous, lacking a valley floor and a well-connected road network. This creates a distinct set of challenges. The enemy’s strategy is clear: to incite communal tension, as Jammu has a diverse population. Their aim is to disrupt inter-community relationships.”

He further said, “Considering the terrain, the necessity for law and order, and the imperative to maintain communal harmony and security, we recently held a series of meetings chaired by J&K LG Manoj Sinha. All security forces and partners participated, resolving to confront the enemy directly.”

DGP said “While the specifics of our strategy cannot be disclosed to avoid aiding our adversaries, we are enhancing interoperability among forces and establishing more security camps. This will reduce the time gap between receiving information and taking action, alongside increasing our intelligence assets.”

Regarding the enhancement of intelligence gathering and inter-agency coordination, the DGP said “We have established robust anti-terror systems both in the rear and in the hinterland. We are enhancing our coordination to ensure that in the event of any breach, we can promptly exchange information and leverage each other’s strengths. Each force brings unique combat experience and specialized skills. By pooling these resources, we aim to optimize our effectiveness.”

DGP RR Swain further elaborated, “The investigative aspect of the anti-terrorism effort is being strengthened by involving the NIA, the SIA, and specialized police units. While we target and neutralize foreign terrorists, we are also focusing on the activities of the OGW network and the few enemy agents who assist terrorists. Clear messages will be sent, and exemplary punishments under the law will be enforced.

“The entire security community, with all its assets—including intelligence, investigation, and combat units—has resolved to crush any attempt to create a terror ecosystem with an iron hand,” RR Swain reassured The New Indian.
