NEW DELHI: Lewis Hamilton, the celebrated Formula One driver for Mercedes-Benz AMG, recently swapped his high-speed racing car for an entirely different kind of machine—a fighter jet. The seven-time world champion took to the skies as part of a space training program organized by luxury watchmaker and Hamilton’s sponsor, IWC Schaffhausen. The experience gave Hamilton a taste of the skies, further fueling his ambition to one day journey beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

Unlike the familiar grip of a steering wheel in his Mercedes race car, Hamilton used a joystick to pilot the jet. Demonstrating his natural skill for high-speed manoeuvres, he performed advanced aerial tricks such as barrel rolls and G-turns, thrilling spectators and even surprising himself. Describing the adventure, Hamilton said, “It felt like floating in the clouds.” The breathtaking experience clearly left an impression on the F1 legend, who admitted, “I’d love to go to space.”

This remarkable feat reflects Hamilton’s appetite for pushing boundaries not just on the track but in other high-adrenaline environments. Known for his relentless pursuit of excellence, he has long expressed interest in space exploration and advanced aviation. By participating in this program, Hamilton showcased his adaptability and drive, transitioning seamlessly from the precision of racing on the ground to navigating a fighter jet in the skies.

The timing of this adventure is notable as he is all set to leave Mercedes-Benz AMG. Although still firmly committed to his racing career, his recent ventures suggest he is also looking to expand his horizons beyond Formula One. Whether competing at over 300 km/h on asphalt or performing gravity-defying tricks thousands of feet in the air, Hamilton continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
