NEW DELHI: The 22nd Law Commission of India has embarked on an examination of the Uniform Civil Code, following a reference received from the Ministry of Law and Justice.
The Uniform Civil Code aims to implement uniform personal laws that would be applicable to all citizens without any discrimination based on religion, gender, caste, etc. It entails a standardised set of laws that would govern personal aspects including marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession.
Currently, the personal laws of different communities are predominantly influenced by their respective religions.

Previously, the 21st Law Commission of India had delved into the subject of the Uniform Civil Code and sought input from all stakeholders.
This involved issuing appeals and questionnaires on October 7, 2016, as well as subsequent public notices on March 19, 2018, March 27, 2018, and April 10, 2018. These efforts generated an overwhelming response from the public.

In response to the feedback received, the 21st Law Commission published a consultation paper titled ‘Reforms of Family Law’ on August 31, 2018.

“Considering that more than three years have passed since the issuance of the consultation paper, and taking into account the significance and relevance of the subject, as well as various court orders on the matter, the 22nd Law Commission of India deemed it necessary to reexamine the topic,” the Ministry of Law and Justice stated.

Consequently, the 22nd Law Commission of India has decided to once again invite views and ideas from the general public and recognised religious organisations regarding the Uniform Civil Code.
Those who are interested and willing to contribute are encouraged to present their perspectives within a period of 30 days from the date of this notice. Submissions can be made by clicking the provided “click here” button or by emailing membersecretary-lci[at]gov[dot]in to reach the Law Commission of India.
