LAKHIMPUR KHERI: A Congress delegation led by senior leader Rahul Gandhi today met President of India Ram Nath Kovind demanding the resignation of MoS (Home) Ajay Mishra Teni whose son is accused of running over an SUV on farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri on October 3.
“We told the President that the accused’s father who is MoS Home, should be removed from the post as a fair probe is not possible in his presence. We also demanded inquiry be done by two sitting judges of Supreme Court,” Rahul Gandhi told reporters.
“President has given us the assurance that he will discuss the matter with the government today itself,” Priyanka Gandhi said.
Besides Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, senior party leaders AK Antony and Ghulam Nabi Azad, Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, and KC Venugopal were present during the meeting.
This comes days after he visited Lakhimpur Kheri and Bahraich to meet the families of the farmers who were mowed by the vehicle of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Mishra Teni’s son Ashish Mishra, presently in police remand.
Teni’s son Ashish Mishra is one of the prime accused in the case.
On Friday, Rahul Gandhi first addressed a press conference in the national capital ahead of his visit to Lakhimpur Kheri and lashed out at the government for not allowing the opposition party leaders to meet the family members of the victims.
The Uttar Pradesh police had detained Priyanka Gandhi along with party’s Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Hooda on October 3 when they tried to visit Lakhimpur Kheri.
Rahul along with party leaders KC Venugopal, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and his sister Priyanka Gandhi met the family members of the victim farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri and Bahraich districts.
