Speaking exclusively to the New Indian, Dev said “CM Mamata will always stand by farmers as she did in Singur by holding a 26-day fast. We are not here to politicise the matter or clash with the police. We are here to show our solidarity towards them. Not letting us, Priyanka Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav to meet them is totally undemocratic.” Dev called for Opposition’s unity, adding “BJP must be defeated in the state polls next year”.

Eight people died while several others were injured in Lakhimpur Kheri on Sunday in the deadly clash since the farmers’ protest over the agricultural laws erupted last year.

The violence broke out after four farmers were allegedly mowed down by vehicles driven by BJP workers travelling to welcome Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.

The driver was allegedly dragged out of the vehicles and then lynched by the irate protesters.

Two cars were set ablaze.

As Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi and other opposition leaders headed to the Tikonia village, about 225 km from Lucknow, the Uttar Pradesh authorities imposed section 144 of the CrPC in the district.
