Two Dalit sisters were found hanging from a tree in Nighasan, Lakhimpur Kheri, UP on Wednesday evening.

Six persons have been arrested for allegedly gangraping two minor Dalit sisters and strangling them to death, in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri. The bodies of the sisters were found hanging from a tree. The accused have been identified as Chotu, Junaid, Suhail, Kamruddin, Arif, and Hafiz.

Police have registered a case under Section 302 (murder), 323 (assault), 452 (house trespass), 376 (rape) of the IPC and POCSO 3 and POCSO 4 Act at Nighasan Police Station.

Lakhimpur Kheri SP Sanjeev Suman confirmed the arrest of all the six accused to The New Indian.

“Chotu, one of the accused, introduced the two girls to Junaid, Suhail, and Hafiz, who allegedly took them to farmland. There they raped them. When they insisted they marry them, the trio strangled them with their dupattas.”

“They then called Kamruddin and Arif at the spot and hanged the girls’ bodies from the tree. All five are from a nearby village,” said Suman.

During interrogation, Suhail and Junaid claimed to have sexually assaulted the girls before killing them, he added.

Suman also said the revelations were made on the basis of prima facie evidence and statements of the accused. “We still have to verify certain things and corroborate the sequence of events.”

The girls’ mother said both her daughters were present at home. “Chotu, who is the son of Chetram, came to my house. He was accompanied by three men on motorbikes. They kidnapped my daughters from our house.”

“When I resisted, they also thrashed and pushed me away. They took my daughters towards the farmland. Later, both were found hanging from a tree,” she said.

After their bodies were recovered, the villagers gathered at the site. The relatives protested on the streets and blocked the road.

Lucknow Range IG Laxmi Singh and SP Suman also reached the spot and carried out investigations. The officers assured the family of quick action against the accused.

Police said the accused were arrested during a late-night operation in the area. One accused was arrested following an encounter in the early hours on Thursday. Further investigations are on.
