NEW DELHI: Veteran actor Sharmila Tagore disclosed that her son, Saif Ali Khan’s divorce from Amrita Singh was tumultuous and “not-so-harmonious” following the split in the 10th episode of “Koffee With Karan”.
Becoming the first mother-son duo to grace the couch, they shared untold stories from Saif’s childhood, reminiscing about his teenage years and his first marriage with Amrita.
The actor of Sacred Games fame candidly recalled breaking the news of his wedding to Amrita to his mother when she was in Mumbai. Despite and Thursday’s episode of “Koffee With Karan” marked a historic moment as it featured the first-ever mother-son pairing on the iconic couch. Renowned actor Sharmila Tagore and her son, Saif Ali Khan, graced the 10th episode of the eighth season, offering viewers an intimate glimpse into their relationship.

Amidst the lively banter, the duo shared untold stories from Saif’s childhood, reminiscing about his mischievous teenage years and shedding light on his first marriage to actor Amrita Singh. Saif candidly recalled breaking the news of his wedding to Amrita to his mother, who was in Mumbai to meet him. Sharmila had advised him earlier to not get married.
“A big tear fell out of her eye, and she started crying. She said, ‘You’ve really hurt me,” Saif said, going against his mother’s wishes against marriage with Amrita.
After Saif’s disclosure, she emphasised the importance of sharing every aspect of one’s life with parents, placing weight on their role in their children’s upbringing.
Saif further revealed that when he decided to separate from Amrita, his mother was the first person he confided in. She offered her support, expressing that she stood by his decision.
The veteran actor acknowledged the difficulty of any breakup, especially when children are involved, reflecting upon the pain and hurt experienced by all parties.

Despite the challenges, Sharmila tried to maintain harmony but recognised the need for time to heal.
Sharmila mentioned that the challenging period resulted in not just the loss of Amrita but also of both of their children — Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan.
Currently, Saif is happily married to Kareena Kapoor Khan, with whom he shares two sons, Taimur and Jeh, while Amrita lives with her two kids.
