NEW DELHI: The historic Kho Kho World Cup debuted at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Monday with a dazzling Opening Ceremony. Players from 23 nations and thousands of fans gathered to celebrate this milestone event for the indigenous sport.
Indian Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse, IOA President PT Usha, and other dignitaries, including Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, J&K’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Shukla, attended the ceremony. International Kho Kho Federation (IKKF) and Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) President Sudhanshu Mittal enthusiastically welcomed the participants.

The event began with a stunning sand art projection honouring Mother Earth, followed by a ceremonial parade of the Indian flag, which filled the stadium with patriotic pride. The unveiling of the World Cup trophies for men’s and women’s tournaments, marked by the lifting of a cube, sparked loud cheers.

KKFI President Sudhanshu Mittal described the moment as a dream come true. “Kho Kho’s journey to the international stage is remarkable. The passion of the visiting nations ensures a bright future for the sport,” he said.
IOA President PT Usha called the tournament a celebration of India’s heritage. “Kho Kho renews our love for indigenous games and strengthens our sporting legacy,” she noted.
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya commended Kho Kho’s global growth, with the sport now played in 50 countries. “This is a proud moment for India. I hope to see Kho Kho at the Asian Games and Olympics soon,” he said.
The Vice President, alongside Raksha Khadse, lit the ceremonial torch, officially inaugurating the event. “This is a golden chapter in the history of our sport,” Dhankhar declared, praising Kho Kho’s agility and artistry.
The week-long tournament, running from January 13 to 19, opened with a match between India and Nepal, promising a thrilling celebration of the indigenous sport on an international stage.
