NEW DELHI: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge raised serious concerns over reports of a new Chinese military base being constructed near Pangong Tso in eastern Ladakh. Kharge cited recent news reports and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi led NDA government of failing to maintain India’s territorial integrity and demanded transparency regarding the border situation with China.

According to the reports shared by Kharge, the Chinese military has allegedly built bunkers for storing weapons and fuel, as well as hardened shelters for armored vehicles around Pangong Lake. Kharge questioned how China could establish such infrastructure on land that was previously under Indian occupation until May 2020.

Highlighting what he described as the government’s negligence, Kharge asserted that India has lost control over 26 patrolling points out of 65 along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), including critical areas like the Depsang Plains, Demchok, and Gogra Hot Springs.

“The Indian National Congress once again reiterates its demand for the government to inform the nation about the current border situation at the LAC. We stand firmly with our brave soldiers,” Kharge stated in a social media post.

Kharge also criticized Prime Minister Modi for allegedly downplaying the border standoff with China over the years. He pointed to various statements made by Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar that, according to Kharge, demonstrated a weak stance towards China. He particularly cited an interview where PM Modi purportedly failed to assert India’s position strongly, and a subsequent statement by Jaishankar claiming that China had not occupied Indian territory.

Kharge noted that despite recent diplomatic engagements, including a meeting between Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart on July 4, China continued to exhibit aggression by reportedly constructing a military base at Sirijap, an area claimed to be under Indian control.

The escalating tensions at the LAC have sparked renewed concerns about India’s national security and the government’s handling of the border issue. Kharge’s critique underscores growing political pressure on the Modi administration to adopt a more assertive stance against Chinese advancements along the disputed border.
