Tiffin bomb behind Kerala blasts, state on alert: DGP Dr. Sheikh Darvesh Saheb

ERNAKULAM: Kerala police DGP, Dr. Sheikh Darvesh Saheb, has confirmed the use of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the coordinated bomb blasts at the Zamra Convention and Exhibition Centre where the Jehovah’s Witnesses was conducting a prayer meeting on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters, DGP said, “Preliminary investigation points to IED device as probe unfolds.”

The attack, which occurred during a prayer meeting of Jehovah’s Witnesses, resulted in the death of one woman and left over 30 people injured. There are reports that an IED kept inside a tiffin box led to the blasts.

Dr. Saheb stated, “We will be constituting a special team for this today itself after I reach the spot.” The National Investigation Agency (NIA) team has also reached the site to assist in the investigation.

Additionally, the National Security Guard (NSG) has rushed one of its bomb disposal units from Delhi to Kerala to collect and inquire about the materials used in the explosion. Detailed inspection by the forensic team, fingerprint experts, fire force and the bomb squad is currently in progress.

Witnesses at the scene described multiple explosions during the ‘Jehovah Witness’ Convention, which had gathered over 2,000 people.

It is crucial to note that neither state nor central agencies have received intelligence reports confirming whether the explosion was premeditated. In light of the situation, a high alert has been issued across the entire state of Kerala as the investigation continues to unfold.
