Kerala police arrests doctor for dowry suicide of Kerala medical student

NEW DELHI: Kerala police arrested Dr Ruwaise, on Thursday, in the death-by-suicide case of the PG Medical student Dr Shahana, who was found dead at her apartment on Tuesday morning.

“The accused was arrested few minutes ago. He has been charged under sections of Abetment to Suicide and the Dowry Act. During the questioning we have found that he is guilty and more details needs to be probed,” said DCP Nidhin Raj following the arrest of the accused Dr Ruwaise.

Presently, the police have taken cognisance of the matter and have taken Dr. Ruwaise to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College police station.

According to reports, Shahana had to take the most extreme step following the Ruwaise family canceling their marriage after their dowry demands could not be met by the bride’s family. The family had demanded a 15-acre plot of land, 150 sovereigns of gold, and a BMW car.

Following her death, her brother, Jasim, struck with grief, illustrated that the 26-year-old had been severely depressed after her wedding was canceled, even though it was Ruwaise who had been the first to propose.

“She was under heavy depression after she came to know that her marriage would not happen due to the dowry issue. He ( Dr Ruwaise) had come and proposed to her and not the other way. Finally, he agreed to conduct the marriage. We then approached his family. His father had demanded a huge amount as dowry. We then decided to refrain from this marriage. But they were both in a strong relationship as she had already made up her mind and had trusted him. She insisted that she wanted to marry him,” said Shahana’s brother.

He added that the dowry issue had broken her, crashing all of her hopes and dreams. “But the dowry amount was something which we couldn’t afford at any cost. We were completely helpless. We were also very much interested as he was the PG association president and wanted to go with the alliance. But the dowry issue shattered us completely and she wasn’t able to recover from the depression,” said Jasim.

Presently, Dr Ruwaise has been charged under IPC sections concerning Abetment to Suicide and relevant sections under the Dowry Prohibition Act.
