NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal will meet his Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand counterparts MK Stalin and Hemant Soren on Thursday and Friday, respectively, to seek their support against a controversial ordinance for Delhi.

For weeks, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo has been meeting senior Opposition figures seeking their support to block the Delhi services ordinance when it is tabled in the parliament for debate and voting.

The ordinance has overturned a recent Supreme Court order granting powers to the Delhi government for transfer and posting of officers dealing with subjects other than public order, police, and land.

Promulgated by the Central government on May 20. It grants the lieutenant governor supervisory powers over the entire officer cadre in the national capital territory.

On May 23, Kejriwal embarked on a nationwide tour to garner support from various Opposition parties on this issue. Chief ministers Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal and Nitish Kumar of Bihar have already expressed their support for Kejriwal’s efforts.

Recently, the Delhi CM also met with Uddhav Thackeray of Shiv Sena, Sharad Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Sitaram Yechury of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), who have pledged to Oppose the ordinance in the upcoming parliament session.

Although AAP may lack support in the Lok Sabha, it hopes to gather enough support to defeat the ordinance in the Rajya Sabha.

Interestingly, the Congress party has not yet announced its support, and its central leadership remains indecisive despite Kejriwal’s letters to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. In this wake, some Congress leaders have referred to AAP as BJP’s “B-Team.”

Given that AAP did not support Congress on issues like the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and some other issues, leaders like Ajay Maken, Sandeep Dixit, Alka Lamba, and Anil Chaudhary are unlikely to back AAP.

Kejriwal has also sought the support of Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao.
