NEW DELHI: Keir Starmer, leader of the UK Labour Party, faces increasing political pressure following the results of a new poll showing that 76% of the British public supports a national inquiry into grooming gangs. Despite the overwhelming public demand, Starmer and Labour MPs voted down a Conservative amendment that would have initiated such an inquiry.
The vote was a significant blow to Starmer’s credibility on women’s rights, with critics accusing the Labour leader of sacrificing these rights in favor of political correctness and multiculturalism.
Paola Diana, Chair of the Women’s Policy Centre, sharply criticized the Labour leadership, stating that women’s rights had been “sacrificed” in the name of avoiding accusations of racism and Islamophobia.

The poll’s results also reveal a stark contrast in opinion, with the majority of Conservative and Reform UK voters supporting an inquiry, while a smaller portion of Labour voters shared the same view.
This controversy has placed Starmer at odds with public opinion, especially in light of Labour constituencies being implicated in some of the most high-profile grooming gang cases. As Starmer continues to defend his position, the debate over how to handle sensitive issues of race, immigration, and women’s rights is intensifying. Many are questioning whether Labour’s stance on the issue will harm its prospects in future elections.
