Kashmiri Pandits Knock Dilli Darbar; Demand Safety, Compensation for Slain Members

NEW DELHI: The unprecedented protest against the gruesome killing of a Kashmiri Pandit in Kashmir’s Budgam district on Thursday reached Delhi as hundreds of community members staged a protest near Jantar Mantar on Sunday.

The protestors are demanding the announcement of compensation to the family of Rahul Bhat, who was killed inside the tehsil office. They are also demanding immediate reposting of Hindu Kashmiris posted in Kashmir to a safe and secure zone like Jammu. They also demanded immediate enactment of the ‘Prevention of Atrocities And Genocide Bill’ in Kashmir.

Speaking to The New Indian, Ramesh Razdan a Delhi based veteran Kashmiri activist said, “Compensation should be given to Rahul Bhat’s family and all those who have been killed since 1991.” “To stop such genocides we have proposed a bill ‘Prevention of Atrocities and Genocide Bill’. The bill should be immediately enacted so that genocide won’t take place in Kashmir again and again,” Razdan added.

“Our protest will continue. The centre has to find a way out,” said Sunil Moza, who lives in Michigan, United States. “You can bring out a solution when you are interested in the question. BJP has a capable leader (in PM Narendra Modi) but his fellow leaders are either not capable or not interested (in finding a solution for the Kashmiri Pandits). Kashmiri Pandits are not properly represented,” Moza added.

“This is a problem of the Home Ministry. They have to bring out a solution. The Non-Hindus are not cooperating with us, they are just showing some courtesy,” K Kaul, a Delhi based Kashmiri rights activist, said. “The Muslims, who are not interested in showing such behaviour towards the Hindus, are also forced to join the others,” K Kaul added.

Anjali Ada, a Kashmiri poet, author and activist echoed the views of other agitators who asserted that the Kashmiri Pandits are being selectively killed.

“The brutal killing of Rahul Bhat is nothing but an act of repetition of target killing that we have seen in the 1990s. Our generation witnessed this in the 1990s, and now the same thing is recurring in the time of our children,” Ada said, highlighting a brutal truth.

“In 32 years, we have not picked up any arms. We wanted this (BJP) government to come to power but the government has not done anything satisfactory,” Ada said while appealing to the centre to hang the terror criminals to death.

“Rahul Bhat belongs to the community. We have come here to express condolences to the family of the deceased Kashmiri pandit. This is the continuation of genocide,” Razdan said.

“There are 4,500 exiled people, who are employed in Kashmir. The security situation is not safe at all for them,” the veteran Kashmiri rights activist said. “Government of India is completely responsible for creating such a situation. A bond has been taken for them. Government has given them a job but made them bonded labourers,” he added.

“Our demand is to shift the Kashmiri Hindus immediately to Jammu into different departments,” Razdan demanded.

“We are the original inhabitants of Kashmir. Our documented history is more 5000-year-old. We demand Kashmir should be divided into two parts. To the North East of river Jhelum, a union territory, a homeland for the Kashmiri Pandits should be created where the Indian constitution is followed. And where there would be co-existence,” Razdan added.

“It’s a Union Territory. This is the issue of the Central Government. Even after the scrapping of Article 370, we expect a tribunal for the Kashmiris. A separate union territory where Kashmiri Hindus will be safe,” Lalit Ambadar, acclaimed Kashmiri pandit, said. “Islamic terrorism can’t be stopped but you can contain it. No jihadis are punished in Kashmir,” he added.
