NEW DELHI: Dr Kousar Bakshi, a doctor from Singhpora in Baramulla, has become the first person from the Kashmir Valley and the second in Jammu and Kashmir to own a piece of land on the moon. The Lunar Registry confirmed Dr. Bakshi’s successful bid, making him the proud owner of a lunar property located at Mare Tranquillitatis (Sea of Tranquillity), with specific coordinates of 8.35 degrees North Latitude and 30.85 degrees East Longitude, Tract 34, Parcel 21024.

Excited about this groundbreaking accomplishment, Dr Bakshi shared, “I applied for the bid on July 6, 2023, and I recently received confirmation on September 12, 2023, that my bid was successful.”

Expressing his joy and gratitude, Dr Bakshi dedicated this achievement to his father, saying, “This is for you, Dad. It’s all because of you, and I love you.” Currently serving as the CEO of ARML Labs in Handwara, Dr. Bakshi sees this as a dream come true and expressed his elation about being the first from the Kashmir Valley to accomplish this feat.

It’s worth noting that Dr. Bakshi is the second person from Jammu and Kashmir to own lunar land. Rupesh Masson, a 49-year-old businessman from Jammu, previously secured a piece of the moon, becoming the pioneer in this unique property ownership. Masson’s lunar property is situated on “Luna Earth Moon, Tract 55-Parcel 10772, known as Lacus Felicitatis (Lake of Happiness).”

Buying land on the Moon is as simple as buying a dress online. Agencies like the International Lunar Lands Registry (ILLR) make it happen, acting as brokers in this unique property-buying process. On their website, you’ll find a list of 12 lunar sites, kind of like picking a block in a giant moon apartment complex.

Once you’ve selected your lunar spot, these agencies promise to hook you up with a property claim, an ownership deed, and even a satellite photo of your newfound property. Just keep in mind, that there might be some extra costs for shipping and processing the deed.

Now, let’s talk prices. Depending on where you want your lunar real estate, it can be as affordable as around Rs 1,500 per acre (that’s $19) or go up to about Rs 10,000 per acre ($120). It’s like picking your favourite block in the moon neighbourhood, but instead of streets, you’re choosing craters and landscapes.
