NEW DELHI: Actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, who is presently being held in connection with the Renukaswamy murder case, has been granted temporary relief by the Karnataka High Court. Justice S. Vishwajith Shetty approved the six-week interim bail so that Thoogudeepa may have surgery. After lengthy deliberations, the actor’s attorney, senior advocate CV Nagesh, and the state’s public prosecutor, P. Prasanna Kumar, each presented opposing arguments before the decision was made.

Justice Shetty reviewed documentation from a neurologist at a Ballari government hospital and medical reports from Ballari Central Prison, where Thoogudeepa is being kept, during Tuesday’s court session.

Thoogudeepa’s defense claims that he has been suffering from numbness in both of his feet and has asked for surgery to be performed at a private hospital in Mysuru, with all costs covered by him. The prosecution objected to this request, claiming that the treatment could be performed at a government facility and that the medical records did not specify the length of hospitalization needed.

The court also looked at Supreme Court precedents, highlighting the fact that the state has no right to control where an undertrial receives medical care. Justice Shetty, however, was intrigued by the desire for Mysuru and recommended that a physician in Bengaluru assess the length and necessity of the procedure.

On September 21, Thoogudeepa’s legal team initially requested bail, but a sessions judge denied their request. The actor then petitioned the high court for relief, asking for temporary bail so that he could get therapy. Following the discovery of 33-year-old Renukaswamy’s body next to a stormwater drain in Bengaluru, the actor was taken into custody on June 11.

According to investigations, the incident was caused by Thoogudeepa fan Renukaswamy sending insulting messages to the actor’s buddy Pavithra Gowda. Gowda is one of several suspects in the crime, according to police, who claim that Renukaswamy was lured to a shed where he was tortured and killed.

Thoogudeepa can now take advantage of the short reprieve granted by the interim bail order to attend to his health concerns while he awaits additional court procedures.
