NEW DELHI: Congress-led Karnataka government’s decision to lift the ban on hijab in education institutions has ignited a fierce tussle between the ruling party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Saturday.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah defended the move, emphasising the personal nature of choices in dress and food. On the other hand, the BJP accused the Congress of pursuing a “divide and rule” strategy reminiscent of British policies.
Addressing reporters in New Delhi, BJP Karnataka President, Vijayendra criticised Siddaramaiah, alleging that the state government’s decision would disrupt the academic atmosphere. He raised concerns about the secular nature of educational spaces. However, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge illustrated support for the CM, asserting that it aligns with the law and the Constitution.

The hijab controversy originated in January 2022 when six female students were reportedly denied entry to a Government Pre-University College in Udupi district for wearing headscarves. Statewide protests ensued leading to legal battles in both the Karnataka High Court and the Supreme Court.
The SC’s split verdict in October 2022 highlighted the conflicting views on whether the hijab is a matter of choice or subject to state interference.
Apart from Kharge, other ministers such as Madhu Bangarappa and HK Patil have also expressed their support. Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) National President Jayant Chaudhary also expressed his support for lifting the hijab ban.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh criticised the move, warning that it could lead to the establishment of Sharia law in Karnataka. Other BJP leaders, including former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, also condemned the decision, accusing the Grand Old Party of appeasement politics.
