Karkardooma Court grants bail to Jamia student Meeran Haider in 2020 Delhi riots case

New Delhi: Delhi’s Karkardooma Court has granted interim bail to Meeran Haider, a Jamia Millia Islamia student and leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) youth wing, in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots case. The police have alleged a larger conspiracy to incite violence during the riots, accusing Haider of being a key coordinator of the Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC).

Haider’s lawyer sought bail on humanitarian grounds, citing the recent death of Haider’s sister’s premature child. The lawyer argued that Haider’s sister currently lacks support from other male family members, as her husband is employed in the UAE. Additionally, the lawyer emphasized that Haider has been in continuous custody since April 1, 2020, without having previously sought interim bail.

After verifying the facts presented in the application, the court found it appropriate to grant Haider interim bail for ten days. The conditions of the bail include prohibitions on contacting any witnesses, tampering with evidence, or engaging with the media, including social media.

Haider’s regular bail application is currently pending before the Delhi High Court, following its denial by the trial court earlier. The Delhi Police have alleged that Haider played a significant role in organizing protest sites during the February 2020 Delhi Violence, which resulted in 53 deaths and over 700 injuries.

Along with Haider, the police have accused other activists, including Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, of masterminding the riots. The violence was reportedly linked to protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The court’s decision to grant interim bail to Haider has provided temporary relief, but the case continues to have significant implications.
