SRINAGAR: Warning against potential misuse of Jammu and Kashmir’s current administrative structure, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized today that any perceived benefits from the Union Territory (UT) status are short-lived.
“Some might think they can exploit the current setup to their advantage, finding weaknesses within the system. Let me assure you, this is a transitional phase,” Abdullah stated while presiding over a meeting with Cabinet members and top officials at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar.
Referring to his recent meetings in New Delhi, which he described as highly productive, Abdullah shared that he had received firm commitments regarding a shift in J&K’s governance framework. During his visit to the capital last week, he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior leaders, presenting them with a Cabinet-passed resolution seeking full statehood restoration.
Reaffirming his zero-tolerance stance on corruption, Abdullah noted that the temporary UT status and governance model will not shield those involved in corrupt activities. “When full statehood returns, there will be no gaps left to exploit,” he warned, urging those seeking to benefit from the present setup to consider the long-term repercussions.

“Our commitment to a corruption-free J&K must be genuine. The citizens of J&K will observe us upholding this pledge,” he added, calling on Cabinet members and officials to lead by example in creating a transparent, accountable government.
