SRINAGAR: Five people, including a Rohingya man, have been arrested in connection with a case of alleged human trafficking in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, the police said.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Bandipora, Lakshay Sharma told The New Indian, “In this case, there are two levels of criminality, first is the illegal infiltration of Rohingya women who stay in refugee camps in Bangladesh, into India. The next is bringing them to the UP of Jammu and Kashmir and selling them off as brides in exchange for money. This is, therefore, an offence of infiltrating, women and human trafficking with legal action taken on the said criminality under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Foreigners Act, 1946.

“In the instant case, we have managed to arrest the kingpins of the said human trafficking nexus and have successfully established a trail of finances, which corroborate the trafficking. Two Rohingya, women have been found to be married to locals in the said case and procedure established by law shall be followed for them.”
Earlier in the month, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted a comprehensive operation at 55 locations across 10 states and Union Territories (UTs) and apprehended 44 operatives in four human trafficking cases.
The NIA’s inquiry into the matter uncovered that various units of this illicit human trafficking network were distributed across multiple states, such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, and functioning from those locations.
