J&K police thwart LeT terror module targeting policemen: DGP commends preventive measures

SRINAGAR: In a significant breakthrough, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, after eight days of intense investigation, have successfully exposed a terror module linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) responsible for carrying out target killings. The revelation came to light following an attack on Constable Mohd Hafeez Chak, who sustained critical injuries. The police believe this discovery has averted the potential loss of many lives, as the arrested terrorists had several other policemen and civilians on their hit list.

The injured police personnel, Chak, was swiftly transferred to JVC Hospital Srinagar for immediate treatment and later to 92 Base Hospital Badamibagh Army hospital.

Addressing a press conference, Director General of Police J&K, Rashmi Ranjan Swain, said, “Srinagar Police has successfully uncovered the entire conspiracy behind the recent attack on Constable Mohd Hafeez Chak. The mastermind behind this plot is Arjumand Gulzar, a designated terrorist based in Pakistan with the code name ‘Hamza Burhan.’ He orchestrated the plan to target off-duty police personnel in the valley.”

Swain continued, “The execution of this plan was entrusted to Danish Malla, a resident of Hamdania Colony Bemina, where the targeted constable lived. With the help of Danish, the Pakistani-based handler recruited two hybrid terrorists—Imtiyaz Ahmad Khanday and Mehnan Khan, also known as Mehran. These terrorists sourced weapons from across the border, meticulously studied the movements of police personnel, and carried out the attack. Weapons recovered during their arrest include two Canik TP09 pistols of Turkish make, 65 pistol live rounds, and 4 pistol magazines.”

Highlighting the broader impact of the investigation, the DGP stated, “Our investigation has revealed that the terrorists had identified several other targets. Some were near finalisation, others were in progress, and some were still in the initial planning stages. The efficient work of Srinagar Police, combining high-quality human intelligence with technical support, has provided watertight forensic evidence connecting the criminals to the crime. The police intervention has successfully prevented further killings of policemen and civilians, averting potential tragic incidents in the city.”

Commenting on a concerning trend, Swain remarked, “This is not the first instance of recovering Turkish-made weapons. We are witnessing a pattern where such small arms are being smuggled into Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistan, using drones and other means.”

Regarding the hit list prepared by the arrested terrorists, the DGP added, “Their targets were primarily police personnel, with a few soft-target civilians in their crosshairs.” The police are now vigilant against such emerging threats and remain committed to safeguarding the region against terrorist activities.
