J&K: Flash Floods Damage Houses, Vehicles In Surankote

Heavy downpour over one and hour hour caused flash floods in Surankote town of Poonch last night.

SRINAGAR: A number of vehicles, houses and shops were damaged due to flash floods caused by heavy downpour in Surankote town of Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir last night.

No casualty has been reported so far, officials said, adding that assessment of the damages is being carried out.

Authorities said heavy rainfall over one and half hour caused flash floods in the town.

Several vehicles were washed away in the flash floods, mainly augmented by the blockade of the drainage in the town, local authorities stated.

Gushing floodwaters entered several houses and shops, causing damages to goods stored inside.

Surankote SDM Naheem-ul-Nisa Bhati said that the floods happened by drainage blockade. “We are assessing the damage,” he added.

Rains continued to batter several parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, causing waterlogging in many areas, even as weathermen forecast more spells and thundershowers in the next 24 hours.

Rainfall has brought down minimum temperature to below normal at most places with world famous Gulmarg resort town recording a low of 8.6°C against 11.0°C previous night. It was 3.9°C below normal for north Kashmir.

There was also a slight rise in the water level in Jhelum. It was flowing at 9.16 feet (half of the flood alert mark) near Sangam at 9 am on Monday, recording an increase of nearly 3 feet from 6.25ft in the last 24 hours.

Pahalgam received 31.4 mm followed by Banihal (21.9mm), Qazigund (12.8mm), Kupwara (13.4mm), Kukernag (13.0mm), Kathua (10.8mm), Srinagar (9.2mm), Gulmarg (8.8mm), Bhaderwah (7.5mm), Jammu (6.8mm), and Batote (2.2mm) in the last 24 hours, officials at the Meteorological Department said.

The minimum temperatures also recorded a drop at most places, and barring Katra and Bhaderwah, all observatory stations saw mercury settling below normal for the season.

Srinagar, MeT officials said, recorded a low of 17°C against 18.8°C on the previous night.

“There is possibility of scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rain/thundershower over Jammu & Kashmir in next 24 hours,” the officials said.
