J&K and Ladakh High Court gets its first Buddhist Chief Justice

Justice Tashi has the distinction of being the first person from UT of Ladakh to be appointed as Judge of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh. He was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court in March 2013 and was made a permanent judge in May 2014.

The Union Ministry of Law and Justice on Tuesday notified the appointment of Justice Tashi Rabstan, senior-most judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, as Acting Chief Justice of the High Court.

Justice Rabstan is the first person of Buddhist faith to be appointed as Chief Justice of J&K and Ladakh High Court. He will be the first from the Ladakh Division to hold the office of the Chief Justice of The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir.

He will take over on December 8, following the retirement of current Chief Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey.

“In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint, Shri Justice Tashi Rabstan, senior-most Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, with effect from 08.12.2022 consequent upon the retirement of Shri Justice Ali Mohd Magrey, Chief Justice, High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh,” read the notification.

He has, earlier, served as Chairman of J&K High Court Legal Services Committee and also as Executive Chairman of Ladakh Legal Services Authority.

Justice Rabstan was born on April 10, 1963 at Skurbuchan, in Leh Ladakh. He did his graduation and LL.B. from University of Jammu. He enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Jammu & Kashmir on March 6, 1990, and started his practice in the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
