A Muslim woman, who first converted to Hinduism and then married to her lover, has been given police protection in face of constant threats by her family members in Godda district of Jharkhand.

20-year-old Muskaan Khatoon was in a relationship with 30-year-old Ram Kumar for the past few year. Facing opposition and threats from the woman’s family, they eloped to Bhagalpur in Bihar on October 14.

Seven days later, when they sensed that the water is calm, they went back to register their marriage in a local court in Godda district but Muskaan’s family somewhere got a wind of it. They staged a protest outside the court against. Local police had to intervene to take them to safety. But the couple could not get married that day.

Unfazed, Muskaam and Ram came back to Bhagalpur and got married in a temple in presence of workers of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Tuesday, November 22.

Before marrying Ram according to Hindu rituals, Muskaan Khatoon changed her religion and adopted Sanatan Dharma in Pirpainti area of Bhagalpur.

On Wednesday, Muskaan reached the Godda court to seek police protection for herself, claiming that her family members were threatening to kill her because she changed her religion.

“I got married according to my wish and I am happy with this marriage. I want police security because there is a threat to my life from my father and maternal uncle & paternal uncles,” she said.

Obliging her request, Muskaan has been provided with security by the police and kept at a safe place.

Her husband Ram said that he is very happy with the marriage. Talking to the media, he said that his family members have accepted this marriage.

Ram added that his family members are also constantly being threatened by the family members of Muskaan. He is currently unemployed and Muskaan is a student of Bachelor of Arts (BA) first year.
