NEW DELHI: In the Jamshedpur West Assembly constituency, Saryu Roy of the JDU trails Banna Gupta of the Congress by a margin of 16,296 votes in the Janata Dal vs INC contest.
Part of Jharkhand’s industrial hub, the constituency is a focal point in the 2024 elections. Voting for the seat took place on November 13, during the first phase of the Assembly elections. With a voter turnout of 56.82%, the constituency reflects a slightly lower participation rate compared to other regions in the state.
Traditionally a stronghold of the Indian National Congress (INC), Jamshedpur West has seen fierce competition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The 2024 elections feature 66 candidates, including several independents and representatives from smaller regional parties. The main contenders are INC’s Banna Gupta, the sitting MLA, and BJP’s Saryu Roy, a veteran leader who previously held the seat.

In the 2019 elections, Banna Gupta secured a decisive victory with 96,778 votes, defeating BJP’s Devendra Nath Singh by a margin of 22,583 votes. Gupta’s win reinforced his popularity and the INC’s firm grip on the constituency. This time, Gupta seeks to retain his seat, while Roy aims to leverage his political experience and BJP’s resources to reclaim the constituency.
The contest is viewed as a litmus test for both parties. For the INC, it is an opportunity to solidify its presence, while the BJP hopes to make inroads in a region critical to its state-level aspirations. The large number of candidates, including independents, adds complexity to the race, potentially influencing vote splits.
The results for Jamshedpur West, along with other constituencies, will be announced on November 23. With voting for Jharkhand’s 81 assembly seats completed in two phases on November 13 and 20, the state awaits the final outcomes that will shape its political future.
Jamshedpur West remains pivotal not just for local governance but also as an indicator of broader political trends in Jharkhand, as INC and BJP compete for dominance in this industrial heartland.
