NEW DELHI: Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhary assumed charge as Minister of State for Education at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi, on Tuesday, June 11. On his arrival at the Ministry of Education, Shri Chaudhary was welcomed by the senior officials of the Ministry.

Chaudhary, who was among the 71 ministers who took the oath with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 9, also assumed charge as Minister of State (IC) for the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship at Kaushal Bhawan, New Delhi on the same day.

Speaking on the occasion, Chaudhary said that India with its vast and youthful population needs to be empowered with skilling, reskilling, and upskilling opportunities to fulfil their aspirations. He also emphasized that there is a constant need for new and industry-aligned skills in all walks of life, and the Ministry’s perpetual efforts will make a tangible impact on the skilling and employment landscape.

Chaudhary joined the NDA alliance after his grandfather Chaudhary Charan Singh, who served as the 5th Prime Minister of India, was posthumously honoured with Bharat Ratna. Previously, his party had been in alliance with Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party. The RLD initially secured eight seats and later gained another in a by-poll.

A discord between the SP and the RLD surfaced during last year’s civic polls in Uttar Pradesh, where the alliance partners contested against each other for seats in Nagar Maha panchayats and Nagar panchayats. Chaudhary’s party, the Rashtriya Lok Dal, joined the NDA in March 2024, before the commencement of the Lok Sabha elections.

He has a wealth of experience. He has been a member of several significant committees, including the Standing Committee on Commerce, the Consultative Committee on Finance, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and the Committee on Government Assurances. Additionally, he has previously served on the Standing Committees on Agriculture and Finance, as well as the Committee on Ethics.

Jayant Chaudhary completed his undergraduate studies at Shri Venkateswara College, Delhi University, and earned an M.Sc in Accounting and Finance from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2002.
