ANANTNAG: Extremists attacked the temple of Bargheshekha Bhagwati Mata temple in the Mattan area of Anantnag, in south Kashmir, last Saturday. In the attack, the idols of the goddess were desecrated. The extremists also tried to set the temple on fire.

Even as the police registered an FIR in the case, the administration has not been able to trace the attackers. The attack has triggered a lot of reaction in Jammu & Kashmir with both common devotees and political groups demanding action against the offenders.

National Conference (NC) vice president and former chief minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack. In a tweet, he wrote, “Unacceptable. I strongly condemn this vandalism and urge the administration, especially Jammu and Kashmir Police, to identify the culprits so they can be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Need of the hour is to reassure our Pandit brethren. Request SSP Anantnag and DC Anantnag to look into the matter immediately,” she said in a tweet.

The BJP in the state also expressed similar sentiments. BJYM State President Arundev Singh condemned the incident saying since the 90s, more than 50,000 temples have been destroyed by some people with a “sick mentality” in J&K. “People with the same mentality tried to attack the temple last Saturday and have been trying to fuel the communal violence of J&K in the last few years. They will not be spared. The FIR has been registered and they will be punished,” he told The New Indian.
