The Israeli Air Force released footage on Sunday, showcasing its cutting-edge “Iron Sting” system
NEW DELHI: The Israeli Air Force released footage on Sunday, showcasing its cutting-edge “Iron Sting” system as it made its operational debut. The Israel Defense Force’s (IDF) Maglan unit used this innovative weapon to target Hamas’s rocket launchers in the Gaza Strip, successfully thwarting numerous terrorists.
The Maglan unit, in collaboration with the Air Force, thwarted terrorists using a range of weapons, including the precision mortar bomb known as the “Steel Sting.” The Israeli Air Force posted the documentation of an attack on a rocket launcher employing the “Steel Stinger.”
The ‘Iron Sting’ is a 120 mm mortar munition equipped with both laser and GPS guidance, boasting a range of 1-12 km. It was developed by Elbit Systems and was first unveiled in 2021 by the Defense Ministry, IDF Ground Forces, and Elbit.

According to the Jerusalem Post, this mortar is designed for use in various terrains, both open and urban, and its precise targeting minimises the risk of harm to non-combatants.
Elbit Systems, the developer of the system, expressed in a 2021 news release, “Its operational use will revolutionise ground warfare and equip battalions with organic, accurate, and effective firepower.”
Major General Omer Cohen, the formation commander of Maglan, stated, “Thanks to the precision, lethality, and expertise of our fighters, the Maglan unit, in coordination with the Air Force, has successfully thwarted numerous terrorists, including the use of the precise IED Iron Sting.” He further noted that the unit has eliminated over 100 operatives in Gaza since the beginning of the conflict.
He added, “Since the outset of the war, the Commando Brigade has fiercely battled the enemy’s brutal attacks, eliminating over 100 terrorists in the Gaza Strip. Regular and reservist units such as Magellan, Egoz, and Duvdevan will continue to engage any enemy in any location and neutralise them. Together, we are determined to prevail, and I have complete faith in our soldiers.”
Meanwhile, Israel launched air strikes in Gaza early today, and its aircraft conducted strikes in southern Lebanon overnight. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a meeting of his top generals and war cabinet to assess the escalating conflict.
