Instilling constitutional values in young minds

The recent decision by the Maharashtra government to make the reading of the Constitution’s Preamble mandatory in all schools on Republic Day is a commendable move. This initiative, announced by the Maharashtra School Education Minister, aims to instil a sense of patriotism and constitutional awareness among students.

In a time when the values enshrined in the Constitution are often debated and sometimes misunderstood, this step serves as a reminder of the principles that form the bedrock of our democracy. The Preamble, emphasises justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, and encapsulates the core ideals that our nation strives to uphold.

By making its reading a mandatory part of Republic Day celebrations, the government is ensuring that these values are not just words on paper but are ingrained in the minds of the younger generation. This initiative should be converted to mandatory reading of the preamble daily on school days across the country’s schools and colleges, private or public.

Moreover, this initiative goes beyond mere symbolism. It is a proactive measure to counter the allegations and concerns raised by the Opposition regarding attempts to modify the Constitution. By reinforcing the importance of the Preamble, the government is sending a clear message about its commitment to uphold the Constitution in its true spirit.

Various competitions and events centred around a patriotic theme further enrich the Republic Day celebrations. Activities such as elocution, poetry, drawing, and sports competitions not only meaningfully engage students but also foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Constitution and its values.

Mandatory reading of the Preamble would be part of the decolonisation process that Indians have been going through since the advent of technology and social media. With awareness of the colonial centuries, and the history of invasions and conquests growing, the pride of India’s freedom struggle culminating in the Indian Constitution is a story that needs to be gifted to future generations, so that they remember the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for the freedom struggle.
