BENGALURU: The largest manufacturer of industrial and medical gases in India INOX Air Products (INOXAP) has ramped up its oxygen production capacity after the commissioning of a new oxygen plant, which took just 15 months, at steel company ArcelorMittal’s Hazira Unit.
The new plant breaks new ground in the industrial gases sector as the norm in the global industry is 27 months from design to commissioning.
The new Air Separation Unit (ASU), built at a cost of Rs 350 crore, is the 5th of its kind at the Hazira Unit of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India).
The new ASU has the capacity to produce 700 tonnes of oxygen and 300 TPD of nitrogen every day and along with other liquid medical and industrial gas, the combined production capacity soars to more than 9000 TPD.
Talking about the new ASU, Siddharth Jain, Executive Director, INOXAP, said, “In the process of setting up our 5th ASU at the Hazira Unit, we have rewritten the ASU installation timelines in the global industrial gases business landscape. We have created new benchmarks with our innovative approach towards engineering and project management, with meticulous execution.”
INOXAP had begun the work on the new ASU in February 2021, but the second COVID-19 wave in India caused disruption and hampered the work.
When India experienced an acute medical oxygen shortage during the pandemic, INOXAP swung into action and installed more than 130 medical oxygen storage tanks at different hospitals and healthcare centres across the country.
Last year, the company built eight ASUs across the country as part of its Rs 2,000 crore development drive.
