India’s missile woman: Women empower through unique fields

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Dr. Tessy Thomas, renowned as the ‘Missile Woman’ of India and former Director General of Aeronautical Systems at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), emphasized the importance of women embracing unique fields and nurturing their emotional intelligence to achieve empowerment.

Speaking at a lecture titled ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress’ organized by the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) in Thiruvananthapuram, Dr. Thomas highlighted the need for women to develop their emotional intelligence alongside technical expertise and leadership qualities.

Dr. Thomas, currently serving as the Vice Chancellor of Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education in Tamil Nadu, shared insights from her illustrious career, where she led projects like the Agni-IV and Agni-V missiles. She stressed that while women possess unique strengths such as dedication and passion, enhancing their emotional intelligence is essential for navigating challenges in their careers effectively.

She emphasized the significance of self-empathy, self-esteem, and situational awareness for women to become empowered individuals. Dr. Thomas underscored the importance of nurturing intuitive capabilities and self-confidence, citing her experiences working alongside eminent personalities like Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, who inspired her with courage and motivation.

Dr. Thomas also advocated for promoting equity and respect for the girl child, starting from within families and extending to educational institutions and professional environments. Prof. Chandrabhas Narayana, Director of RGCB, encouraged students and researchers to emulate Dr. Tessy Thomas’s dedication and commitment to excel in their respective fields, aiming to become accomplished experts.
