Indian sibling duo creates buzz at Toronto Chess Tournament

NEW DELHI: In a groundbreaking moment, Indian siblings have left a mark at the inauguration of a major international chess event in Toronto. Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa R and his sister Vaishali Rameshbabu are competing in the Open and Women’s sections respectively at the 2024 Candidates Tournament, organized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

The prestigious tournament, deemed as the pinnacle of the chess world, aims to determine the contenders for the coveted World Champion titles in both the Open and Women’s Categories. Former world champion and FIDE deputy president Vishwanathan Anand officially declared the tournament open, marking a significant moment in chess history.

Accompanied by their mother, R Nagalakshmi, Praggnanandhaa and Vaishali expressed gratitude for the support of their family. Vaishali emphasized the importance of familial encouragement in navigating the challenges of such a high-pressure competition, stating, “It’s nice to have someone from your family who knows you better in such a stressful tournament. For me, I have two people, so it’s great.”

The tournament faced potential relocation to Spain due to delays in visa issuance by Canadian immigration authorities, affecting players, including the Indian contingent. However, the issue was successfully resolved, ensuring that the tournament could proceed as planned in Canada for the first time.

Vishwanathan Anand expressed his enthusiasm about the participation of Indian players, remarking, “It’s a matter of immense pride. Everyone in India is very excited as well and eagerly looking forward to the tournament.”

The presence and performance of Indian players, particularly the sibling duo, have captured attention and stirred excitement within the global chess community, setting the stage for an exhilarating and memorable event.
