NEW DELHI: On January 5, 2025, an Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv crashed in Gujarat’s Porbandar district during a routine training sortie, resulting in the death of all three crew members on board. The crash occurred around 12:10 PM at the Coast Guard Air Enclave, Porbandar.

The ALH Dhruv was conducting a standard training exercise when it reportedly experienced technical difficulties, leading to the fatal crash. Rescue teams quickly arrived at the site, but the three crew members were confirmed dead at the scene. The helicopter was part of the ICG’s fleet, which had been grounded in September 2024 following a similar incident involving another ALH Dhruv helicopter.

The Indian Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the crash to determine its cause. Preliminary reports suggest that technical issues may have contributed to the incident, but authorities are considering all possible factors, including weather conditions and mechanical failure. The investigation is expected to focus on the helicopter’s maintenance records and any potential safety lapses.

This crash follows a similar incident in September 2024, when an ICG ALH Dhruv helicopter crashed during an emergency evacuation mission in the Arabian Sea, resulting in the deaths of two crew members. Following that crash, the ICG grounded all ALH helicopters for comprehensive safety checks. The fleet was only recently cleared for operations after the necessary inspections.

This tragic incident has raised concerns about the safety of the ALH Dhruv fleet, and the Indian Coast Guard is reviewing its operational protocols and maintenance procedures to prevent future accidents.
