NEW DELHI: The Indian Army has mobilized a Task Force to aid ongoing rescue operations after the tunnel collapse near the Srisailam Dam. Demonstrating its steadfast commitment to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations, the Army has deployed specialized teams and equipment to support rescue efforts at the site.
The incident occurred early this morning when a three-meter section of the roof of an under-construction stretch of the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel collapsed at the 14th km mark near Domalapenta, Amrabad Mandal in Nagarkurnool district, approximately 200 km south of Hyderabad. The collapse happened merely four days after construction work had resumed following a prolonged hiatus.

While some workers managed to escape, eight laborers are feared to be trapped inside. In response, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were immediately deployed to the site. Simultaneously, an Engineer Regiment of the Indian Armyโs Infantry Division stationed at Secunderabad was placed on standby with an Excavator Dozer to reinforce rescue operations.
Following an official request from the Chief Secretary of Telangana, the Army promptly mobilized its Engineer Task Force (ETF) for the critical mission. The ETF is equipped with:
- Specialist engineering teams
- A Medical detachment from the Field Ambulance of the Army Medical Corps, along with an ambulance
- Three high-capacity pumping sets, armored hoses, and other essential accessories
The ETF Commander is closely coordinating with the civil administration to streamline efforts at the accident site. Furthermore, a dedicated rescue team comprising engineers and equipment specialists remains on standby, prepared with heavy machinery, including a Size II BD80 Dozer, JCB, and SSL, all loaded onto three Tatra trucks, awaiting final deployment orders.

The situation is constantly monitored by the Headquarters of Telangana & Andhra Sub Area (TASA) and the Infantry Division HQ, ensuring seamless coordination between the Army, civil authorities, and other emergency response teams.
