NEW DELHI: A 334-member contingent of the Indian Army departs for Nepal to participate in the 18th edition of the Battalion-Level Joint Military Exercise SURYA KIRAN. Scheduled from December 31, 2024, to January 13, 2025, the exercise takes place in Saljhandi, Nepal, as part of the annual training event that alternates between the two countries, reinforcing their strong military ties.

 

 

Led by a battalion from the 11th Gorkha Rifles, the Indian contingent collaborates with Nepal’s Srijung Battalion. The exercise focuses on enhancing interoperability in jungle warfare, counter-terrorism operations in mountainous terrain, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) under the United Nations Charter.

Key objectives include refining combat skills, strengthening logistical and operational support through medical training and aviation aspects, and promoting sustainable practices during military operations. This edition follows recent high-level military engagements, including visits by General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff of India, to Nepal, and General Ashok Raj Sigdel, Chief of the Nepali Army, to India, bolstering bilateral defense cooperation.

The joint training provides a platform for exchanging ideas, sharing best practices, and deepening mutual understanding of operational procedures. It underscores the cultural and historical ties between India and Nepal, highlighting their shared commitment to regional peace and stability.
