Army Chief visits Poonch post torture inquiry, says ‘behave professionally’

JAMMU: Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande on Monday visited Poonch District in Jammu. General Pande visited the site of the terrorist attack at Dera Ki Gali in Surankote where four Army jawans were martyred. Three civilians were found dead under mysterious circumstances after being picked up by the Indian Army for questioning.

General Pande interacted with top Army Commanders at Poonch. Sources said that directions have gone to intensify operations targeting natural caves, forests, mountains and other vulnerable areas to eliminate the terrorists hiding in the border districts of Poonch and Rajouri.

As per official sources, the Indian Army Chief visited ground zero in the Surankote area of Poonch for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation including anti-terrorism operations and the killing of three civilians under mysterious circumstances. He was briefed by the Commanders about the situation.

General Pande strongly urged the Commanders to conduct operations in the “most professional manner” and asked the troops to remain resolute and steadfast against all challenges.

Northern Command Chief Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi and Nagrota Corps GOC Lt Gen Sandeep Jain accompanied the Indian Army Chief.

The Indian Army Chief later visited the 25 Infantry Division headquarters in Rajouri and was briefed by the Commanders on the ground about the overall security situation.

Official sources said that nearly 30 terrorists are hiding in the twin border districts. Most of them are believed to be Pakistanis. They might be assisted by some local Kashmiri terrorists also. Local support for shelter and food is also under investigation.

Meanwhile, the officials said that mobile internet services remained suspended in both Poonch and Rajouri districts for the fourth day today as a precautionary measure to check rumour-mongering and prevent miscreants from creating any law and order problem.
