NEW DELHI: Indian Army troops, currently in Sri Lanka for the 10th edition of the Joint Exercise Mitra Shakti, celebrated India’s 78th Independence Day with a series of patriotic activities at the Army Training School in Maduruoya on August 15, 2024.
The day began with a joint yoga session where Indian Army instructors led Indian and Sri Lankan troops in various asanas, symbolising unity and wellness. The session, held early in the morning, set a collaborative tone for the day.
In a proud display of national pride, the Indian contingent participated in the “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign, prominently displaying the Indian Tricolour at their camp.

Sri Lankan Army officers joined their Indian counterparts for a get-together to further celebrate the day, reinforcing the camaraderie between the two forces. Major General UKDPP Udugama, General Officer Commanding 59 Infantry Division of the Sri Lanka Army, who took the Guard of Honour during the opening ceremony, stated that the Joint Exercise aims to build camaraderie, strengthen collective engagement, and reinforce alliances between Sri Lanka and India, reflecting their shared values and beliefs.
Throughout the exercise, Indian troops will introduce their Sri Lankan counterparts to yoga, Indian martial arts, and various tactical skills. This year’s Mitra Shakti focuses on operations in semi-urban environments under Chapter VII of the United Nations Mandate.
Both sides will exchange operational experiences, with specialised units from the Indian Army, including the Rajputana Rifles, Engineers, Signals, and Medical detachments, leading various drills.
The event also featured cultural exchanges and lectures on tactical operations in urban environments and the use of modern technology in counter-insurgency operations. “This exercise is an excellent platform for sharing knowledge and improving our interoperability in key operational areas,” said the Indian Army Contingent Commander.
A vibrant cultural evening organized by the Sri Lankan Army added a festive touch to the day’s celebrations, further deepening the bonds between the two forces.
