Australia has shaken up their lineup for the decisive fifth Test against India at the SCG, dropping Mitchell Marsh after poor form and handing a debut to Beau Webster.
NEW DELHI: Australia has made a significant change to their lineup for the decisive fifth Test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), starting Friday. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been dropped due to a series of underwhelming performances, paving the way for Beau Webster to make his Test debut.
Marsh, 33, has struggled throughout the series, accumulating only 73 runs across seven innings and failing to take a wicket since the first Test. His diminished contributions have seen him fall to 29th in the ICC Test all-rounder rankings, making him Australia’s sixth-best all-rounder. Captain Pat Cummins acknowledged the decision was difficult but necessary, stating that Marsh was informed about the potential outcome.

Beau Webster, 31, has been a standout performer in the Sheffield Shield, earning his place in the national squad. Known for his ability to bowl long spells, Webster’s inclusion is timely, especially considering concerns over bowler workloads, notably Mitchell Starc’s recent back injury scare. Cummins expressed confidence in Webster’s readiness for the crucial match, emphasizing the importance of fresh energy in the squad.
Australia leads the series 2-1 and needs only a draw in Sydney to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since 2014-15. The selectors believe that introducing Webster at this juncture could provide the team with the necessary impetus to secure the series. Cummins also suggested that while Marsh has been omitted for this Test, it doesn’t mark the end of his international career, indicating potential future opportunities.

The decision to replace Marsh has sparked mixed reactions among fans and analysts. Some support the move, citing the need for performance-based selections, while others question the choice of another player in his 30s, advocating for the inclusion of younger talent to ensure long-term team sustainability.
As the cricketing world turns its attention to the SCG, all eyes will be on Beau Webster to see if he can make a significant impact in his debut and help Australia clinch the series.
