NEW DELHI: As part of its commitment to strengthening global peacekeeping partnerships, India successfully conducted the second edition of an online training capsule for the Kyrgyzstan Armed Forces on January 15 and 16. Organized by the Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping (CUNPK) in New Delhi, this initiative reinforces India’s leadership in supporting international peacekeeping efforts.

The two-day program provided participants with a detailed overview of UN peacekeeping operations. It addressed the complexities and challenges faced by peacekeepers operating in volatile regions under the UN flag. The training aimed to equip Kyrgyz military personnel with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively contribute to peacekeeping missions through interactive sessions, case studies, and scenario-based discussions.

India has a long-standing history of active involvement in UN peacekeeping. Since 1950 to May 2023, it has contributed over 275,000 troops, making it one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping forces. Currently, around 5,900 Indian personnel are deployed in 12 UN missions worldwide.

This training capsule marks a significant step in India’s efforts to build capacity among partner nations. It aligns with India’s broader strategy of fostering regional stability and strengthening diplomatic ties. The program also emphasized the core principles of UN peacekeeping, including impartiality, the non-use of force except in self-defence, and the protection of civilians.

In addition to tactical and operational training, the course highlighted the importance of integrating women into peacekeeping missions. India’s Female Engagement Teams, deployed in missions such as MONUSCO (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and UNISFA (Abyei), have been instrumental in promoting gender equality in peacekeeping roles.

India’s proactive approach to training Kyrgyzstan’s armed forces underscores its dedication to global peace and stability. By sharing its expertise and experience, India continues to strengthen its position as a key player in international peacekeeping, fostering collaboration and security across borders.

This initiative enhances the capabilities of the Kyrgyzstan Armed Forces and also reaffirms India’s role as a reliable partner in promoting global harmony and peace.
