NEW DELHI: The Indian hockey team has achieved a historic milestone by securing third place at the Paris Olympics, bringing home India’s fourth bronze medal. In a thrilling match against Spain, India emerged victorious with a 2-1 score at the Yves de Manoir Stadium on Thursday, marking the team’s second consecutive Olympic medal—a feat last accomplished in 1972.

The bronze medal also brought much-needed relief to the Indian contingent in Paris, who had already faced six frustrating fourth place finishes and the devastating disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate the team, calling the achievement “a feat that will be cherished for generations to come.” He highlighted the significance of the consecutive Olympic medals, attributing the success to the team’s skill, perseverance, and teamwork. “Their success is a triumph of grit and resilience,” Modi said, noting that this victory would further strengthen the emotional connection Indians have with hockey and inspire the nation’s youth.

The match saw India trailing before Harmanpreet Singh’s two goals turned the tide, securing the country’s record-tying 13th Olympic hockey medal. The game was tightly contested, with the first two quarters ending in a deadlock (0-0 and 1-1). In the third quarter, India took the decisive lead, finishing with a 2-1 victory.

This achievement follows India’s bronze medal win at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where they defeated Germany 5-4 after a semifinal loss to Belgium.
