KOLKATA: With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections set to go underway, the INDIA Opposition alliance set a deadline of December 31, on Tuesday, to finalise seat-sharing talks
Trinamool Congress sources have confirmed the deadline date for seat-sharing. “TMC along with many INDIA parties, sets the deadline of 31 December 2023, to complete all seat-sharing talks,” said the source.
The decision was taken at the fourth meeting of the Opposition bloc to propel the campaign prior to the general elections. Sources have further elaborated that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had suggested Congress President, Mallikarjun Kharge’s name as the top contender to the berth of the Prime Minister.

However, Kharge had replied, “I work for the downtrodden, let’s win first then we will see. I don’t seek anything.”
In addition to the candidate to the PMO, Banerjee also emphasised fixing on a candidate for the post of convenor of the alliance, alongside a chairperson. Furthermore, the Alliance highlighted that a joint campaign should be started soon.
According to sources, Banerjee had illustrated that she did not have any objection to someone from the Grand Old Party taking the post of PM.
During the course of the meeting, the alliance has also sought to prioritise the regional parties more depending on their strength in a state to reconcile seats.

As per top sources, the Opposition is set to launch a protest against Electronic Voting Machines on December 22. Moreover, a 100 per cent Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slip and counting decisions is also being demanded by the Opposition group.
According to sources, the alliance leaders will be approaching the Election Commission of India with their demands.
However, beyond these factors, the issue of seat-sharing between the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Left was also raised, emphasising the recently concluded Assembly elections.
