A budget of ₹990 crore approved by the Government of India for the establishment of these AI-CoEs
NEW DELHI: The Government of India takes a significant step towards positioning the country as a global leader in artificial intelligence by launching 3 AI Centres of Excellence (CoEs) today across key sectors: healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable cities. These AI-CoE, in collaboration with top academic institutions, are set to revolutionize India’s AI landscape and address global challenges.
The three CoEs, located at IIT Delhi, IIT Ropar, and IIT Kanpur, aim to harness AI for the public good by addressing pressing issues in healthcare, food security, and urban management. The initiative was unveiled by the Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, who emphasized the impact these centres will have on both India’s AI ecosystem and the global AI community.
“The three CoEs in AI—focused on healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable cities—will democratize AI innovations and research, revolutionize healthcare delivery, strengthen food security, and address critical urban challenges,” said Pradhan. He lauded the efforts of the apex committee led by Dr. Sridhar Vembu, Co-chair and Founder of Zoho Corporation, and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his vision of establishing India as a global AI hub.

– AI Centre of Excellence in Healthcare (IIT Delhi and AIIMS New Delhi): This CoE will focus on early disease prediction, diagnostics, and pandemic tracking. It will foster healthcare innovation by integrating AI with traditional and modern medical systems, including AYUSH. The centre will address critical challenges related to affordability, quality, and access to healthcare.
– AI Centre of Excellence in Agriculture (IIT Ropar): Aimed at transforming farming practices, this CoE will leverage AI to offer real-time guidance on crop health, weather patterns, and local conditions. By combining traditional farming knowledge with AI, the centre aims to improve crop quality, reduce losses, and address animal husbandry challenges.
– AI Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Cities (IIT Kanpur): This CoE will focus on smart city planning, traffic management, and resource distribution. By analyzing data from sensors, GIS maps, and satellite feeds, it will predict resource needs and improve urban space design, making cities more efficient and sustainable.

With a budget of ₹990 crore approved by the Government of India for the establishment of these AI CoEs, the centres will collaborate with industry leaders, startups, and research institutions to develop scalable AI-driven solutions.
Dr. Sridhar Vembu highlighted the importance of AI technologies and India’s potential to lead the world in AI-based solutions. “By leveraging our vast data resources, we can develop powerful solutions tailored to our needs,” said Vembu, emphasizing the role of AI in driving global change.
K. Sanjay Murthy, Secretary of Higher Education, emphasized that the CoEs are designed to serve the entire country, not just individual institutions. He highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary research and collaboration to achieve optimal results, noting that competitive challenges in educational institutions have driven progress in solving common issues.
As the centres begin their work, they are expected to contribute to the growth of India’s AI startup ecosystem, create new job opportunities, and establish India as a key player in the global AI arena.
