In New York, Indian-Americans hail PM Modi as a man of action who transformed India in the last one decade
NEW YORK: The excitement among Americans of Indian origin is reaching a fever pitch as Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on a historic visit to the United States, with many of his fans advocating for his re-election in the 2024 general elections.
A number of Indian-Americans who The New Indian spoke to hailed PM Modi as a symbol of Indian pride and a man of action who transformed India in a decade to place the South Asian nation at par with many developed countries.
Mona Gupta, a New York-based psychiatrist, expressed her unwavering support for PM Modi, stating, “PM Modi has done so much for India. I’ve witnessed tremendous progress under his leadership.”
She also said that the United States can learn a lot from Prime Minister Modi’s “pro-India approach”. “I would love to see him continue as PM. India has become cleaner, the roads are better, and the government is pro-business. It’s amazing how much India has transformed,” she remarked.

Sangam Sogani, a hedge fund manager based in Manhattan with roots in Rajasthan, echoed the sentiments of many Indians in the US. “In the US, Indians particularly Gujaratis are always excited about Modi Ji, about the rapid growth in India under his leadership, and about the remarkable infrastructure development”.
With his mother by his side, Sogani, who invests in markets across the world, further said, “Indian markets are thriving. As an investor, I can confidently say that nothing compares to what is happening in India due to the government’s policies.”
Referring to the UN event where PM Modi will lead a Yoga event, he said that Indians feel proud to see people across the globe adopting the ancient Indian practice. “I love the fact that PM Modi is going to promote Yoga at the UN,” he concluded.

On board an American Airlines’ Delhi-New York flight is Saleem Patel who has been working as a crew member for 32 years. With his roots in Gujarat, Patel, despite being away from his mother’s homeland for so many years, speaks fluent Gujarati and feels proud that her mother was from the land of PM Modi.
“My mother, a Gujarati, insisted on retaining her maiden name, Patel, even after marriage,” he said in English before switching to Gujarati, “I want to convey to PM Modi how delighted I am that we are both Gujarati and that this meeting is taking place. I hope it leads to beneficial outcomes for the interests of the US, India, and the world.”
Many non-resident Indians (NRIs) also hailed PM Modi for promoting India culture and heritage at global platforms which, they said, make every Indian proud and adds to India’s soft power as a nation which believes in universal well-being.
The New Indian will be bringing more such ground reportage from New York and Washington DC where PM Modi will get 21 gun salute at the White House followed by bilateral talks with President Joe Biden on Thursday.
