NEW DELHI: On Saturday, when BJP released its first list of candidate for the Delhi assembly elections, it packed a punch that smelt of a mouth-watering photo finish by fielding Parvesh Verma, son of former Delhi CM Sahib Singh Verma against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.

The announcement means Kejriwal is set to face two sons of former CM — Verma (BJP) & Sandeep Dikshit in New Delhi seat.

The battle is also going to see a caste war . While Verma is a Jat, Dikshit is a Brahmin; Kejriwal is a Baniya.

What makes battle a rip roaring contest is that Parvesh is no political novice. He’s a former west Delhi MP besides being son of former chief minister and holds huge sway in the Jat population of Delhi while also enjoying a blemish free image like his father.

Sahib Singh Verma had served as Delhi’s fourth chief minister while holding the office from February 1996 to October 1998, and also leaving a lasting political legacy for the BJP that Parvesh aims to carry forward.

Kejriwal, who is now seeking his fourth consecutive term from the constituency, has been a dominant figure since his seismic 2013 debut victory over then three-time CM Sheila Dikshit by a margin of around 25,000 votes.

Dikshit, who governed Delhi for three consecutive terms between 1998 and 2013, had got mixed reviews and criticism. While was credited with transforming the Capital’s infrastructure, she also faced a raft of graft scandals involving Commonwealth Games 2010.

Her defeat to Kejriwal signaled a turning point in the city’s political landscape. Kejriwal’s subsequent wins in 2015 and 2020 further fortified his hold on the New Delhi constituency.

Following his resignation as chief minister in September, Kejriwal vacated his official residence in Civil Lines and moved to Feroz Shah Road, which also falls within the New Delhi constituency.

He previously stated that the move was intended to stay closer to his constituency and better connect with the people.

As campaigning for elections intensified in the national capital, the Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party have been embroiled in a verbal duel over Arvind Kejriwal of building a lavish ₹45-crore bungalow for personal use despite his claims of leading a simple lifestyle.

BJP’s New Delhi constituency candidate, Parvesh Sahib Singh, amplified the criticism on social media by sharing excerpts from Shah’s speech on platform X, reiterating the allegations against Kejriwal. He accused the AAP chief of abandoning his promise to reject government privileges and indulging in extravagance instead.

Parvesh also tagged Shah in his post and used the hashtag #भ्रष्टाचार_का_शीशमहल (Corruption’s Palace), further emphasizing the BJP’s campaign narrative against Kejriwal’s leadership.
