In 8 Years, India Reformed Diplomacy: Dr Jaishankar

NEW DELHI: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) completed eight years in the centre, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Monday spoke about the reforms in the country’s foreign policy that brought people to the centre.

In a series of tweets, Dr Jaishankar highlighted the reforms in the passport delivery system to respond to immediate challenges like evacuation operations to curb corruption. He also said that India, during the last eight years, has practised diplomacy for development, security and civilisation.

“Sweeping changes in passport delivery: faster, corruption-free and closer to your location. Ensuring safety and security of Indians abroad: Vande Bharat Mission during Covid, Operation Ganga in Ukraine, and many more. Supporting our citizens as they explore the global workplace,” Dr Jaishankar said in a tweet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India on May 26, 2014, following a landslide victory. He also led BJP for the second time to power in 2019. Dr Jaishankar was the first foreign secretary to assume the role of External Affairs Minister in 2019.

After assuming the chair, PM Modi took up the Neighbourhood First approach. Act East policy, a slightly modified version of the existing Look East policy, was also orchestrated during his tenure. Diplomacy has been fruitful in serving the citizens of the country, EAM Jaishankar opined.

Highlighting India’s Operation Ganga, Dr Jaishankar said, Operation Ganga brought back over 20,000 stranded Indians and some foreign nationals from a besieged Ukraine.

While briefing the connectivity initiatives carried out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government on Saturday in Guwahati, Assam, Dr Jaishankar remarked that connectivity, commerce, culture and capacity are the core objectives of Asian confluence. EAM remarked that connectivity is the central improving ease of living and doing business of the Modi government.
