ICC T20 WC: Where Partnerships Matter

Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene hold the record for highest partnership in ICC T20 World Cup

The eighth edition of the ICC T20 World Cup commences on October 16 as 12 teams will battle it out for the coveted title. Last year, Australia triumphed in the biggest spectacle of T20 cricket and will now look to retain the title this year at home given that they are the hosts.

The marquee tournament in the shortest format has seen some sensational performances, but it is not always about the guns blazing and dispatching the ball out of the park. Building a solid partnership helps the side cash in at the right time in the matches. The global tournament has seen a lot of players rising to the occasion, and certain partnerships have held a special place in the hearts of the fans.

Sri Lanka’s dynamic duo of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara are at the top of the list. The two stood strong in the middle of the pitch, scoring a massive partnership of 166 runs between them for the second wicket at Bridgetown against West Indies in 2010. The legendary duo eventually retired from the T20 format in 2014 after lifting their maiden title.

One cannot forget the impressive batting display projected by the Pakistani openers Mohammad Rizwan and skipper Babar Azam against India in the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup. The Men in Blue were unable to break the partnership as the duo scored an unbeaten 152* runs between them, winning the fixture comfortably by 10 wickets.

Team India players too have etched their names in the list of highest partnerships recorded by a team in the World Cup. Openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma handed the side a blistering start as the duo produced a 140-run stand against Afghanistan in the previous edition of the T20 World Cup in Abu Dhabi.
