NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has entered into a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the acquisition of Electronic Warfare (EW) Suites and aircraft modification kits for the Indian Air Force’s Mi-17 V5 helicopters.
The agreement, valued at ₹2,385.36 crore, formalized in New Delhi today, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The ultra modern EW Suites are designed to significantly enhance the operational survivability of the Mi-17 V5 helicopters in hostile environments. These systems will provide advanced capabilities to detect, analyze, and counter threats, thereby improving the helicopters’ defensive measures during missions.
A substantial portion of the sub-assemblies and components for these EW Suites will be sourced from indigenous manufacturers.
Strategic Importance of the Mi-17 V5 Helicopters
The Mi-17 V5 is a versatile and widely utilized medium-lift helicopter in the Indian Air Force’s fleet, employed for various operations, including troop transport, fire support, convoy escort, patrol, and search-and-rescue missions.
The integration of advanced EW Suites will further augment the helicopter’s capabilities, ensuring enhanced performance and survivability in diverse operational scenarios.
Broader Context of Defense Modernization
This contract is part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Defence to modernize the Indian Armed Forces and enhance their operational efficiency. In recent years, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved several proposals aimed at upgrading military equipment and capabilities.
For instance, in August 2023, the DAC granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the procurement and installation of EW Suites on Mi-17 V5 helicopters under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured) category.
Furthermore, the government has been focusing on procuring advanced systems from indigenous vendors to strengthen self-reliance in defense manufacturing. This includes proposals for the acquisition of Light Armoured Multipurpose Vehicles, Integrated Surveillance & Targeting Systems, and Next Generation Survey Vessels, among others.
BEL’s Role in Defense Electronics
Bharat Electronics Limited, a state-owned enterprise, has been at the forefront of developing and supplying electronic equipment and systems for both defense and non-defense sectors. The company’s portfolio includes navigation systems, communication systems, radars, naval systems, and electronic warfare solutions.
BEL’s involvement in this project underscores its critical role in advancing India’s defense electronics capabilities and supporting the nation’s strategic objectives.
The ₹2,385.36 crore contract between the Ministry of Defence and Bharat Electronics Limited for the acquisition of Electronic Warfare Suites for Mi-17 V5 helicopters represents a significant step towards enhancing the Indian Air Force’s operational capabilities. By emphasizing indigenous manufacturing and involving local industries, this initiative strengthens national security and also contributes to the growth and self-reliance of India’s defense sector.
