How India responded to Microsoft services’ failure
The global outage in Microsoft’s cloud services has caused significant disruptions in flight operations, banking, financial services, and hospitals.
NEW DELHI: A massive Microsoft outage affected computer systems worldwide on Friday, July 20. Experts, however, said full recovery from the huge crash would take “some time.”
The breakdown was caused by a malfunctioning software update provided to Microsoft Windows users by CrowdStrike. CrowdStrike is a company specializing in cybersecurity for cloud-based platforms.
Microsoft’s Chairman and CEO, Satya Nadella addressed the issue on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging, “CrowdStrike’s recent update has had a global impact on IT systems. We are actively collaborating with CrowdStrike and industry partners to assist our customers in the recovery process and ensure the secure restoration of their systems.”

CrowdStrike Holdings on the other hand announced that all Windows computers impacted by a global IT failure will need a manual reboot. CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz explained in a media interview that the issue stemmed from a content bug or update, which has since been rolled back.
He apologized to customers, noting that while some systems might take a few hours to return online, others could take longer. Kurtz also mentioned potential manual steps required and the company’s efforts to automate those steps.
CrowdStrike’s technical support team stated that affected systems might need up to 15 reboots.

Major Indian airlines such as IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India, and Vistara also experienced significant disruptions. IndiGo cancelled about 200 flights across India on Friday, citing the global system outage.
Indigo updated: “As an ongoing issue with Microsoft Azure impacts our systems, we are experiencing high volumes at contact cert your travel is within 24 hrs.
“We’re currently facing a technical issue in providing updates on flight disruptions. Our team is actively working to resolve this issue. We regret any inconvenience caused and will update you once the issue is resolved. Thank you for your patience and cooperation,” Spicejet said.
In contrast, Air India reported that none of its flights were cancelled on Saturday due to the worldwide travel systems outage. The airline spokespersons stated, “We confirm that none of Air India’s flights on 19 July were cancelled due to the worldwide travel systems outage, although there were some delays caused by the impact of the outage on airport services. Air India’s resilient IT infrastructure remained unaffected yesterday and continues to function normally.”
The Reserve Bank of India reported only minor disruptions in banking, hospitals also experienced interruptions, switching to manual processes temporarily. Authorities are addressing the situation and ensuring services return to normal as quickly as possible.
Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said that Apple’s 2.2 billion iOS devices did not face an outage because of the “benefit of an Apple ecosystem.” He said, “Everything is controlled within the four walls of Apple Park.”
IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has responded to the global outage. MEITY is in touch with Microsoft and its associates regarding the global outage. The reason for this outage has been identified and updates have been released to resolve the issue. CERT is issuing a technical advisory,” wrote Vaishnaw. The IT minister clarified that the NIC network has not been impacted by the outage. “NIC network is not affected,” added Vaishnaw.
